British man drowns in South Africa

A British holidaymaker has drowned while swimming in the sea in South Africa.

Michael Bircham, 65, appeared to have got into difficulties at Jeffrey's Bay in Port Elizabeth on Saturday while on holiday with his family.

Despite attempts to resuscitate him after he was recovered unconscious from the water, he died at the scene.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed the death and said consular assistance was being provided.

No details of where the dead man came from were available.

A post-mortem examination will take place to discover the exact cause of death.
