Briton drowns after water park ride

A Briton drowned during a ride on a rapids attraction at a water park in Florida, it has been reported.

Ivan Henson, 68, from Manchester, was dragged unconscious on the Roa's Rapids ride at Seaworld Orlando's Aquatica, The Sun reported.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national, Ivan Henson, in Orlando, Florida, on October 4, 2010.

"Next of kin have been informed and the British Consulate in Orlando are providing consular assistance to the family."

The theme park's website describes the ride as an "awesome adventure through a roaring sea of high tides, swirling whirlies and gushing geysers."

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said later that Mr Henson was originally from the South East of England.

The attraction was evacuated for an hour as paramedics tried to save him.

He was later pronounced dead at the nearby Dr Phillips Hospital, in Orlando.

Seaworld issued a statement saying: "Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our guests and employees.

"Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time."
