Britons should sleep less to get towels down before Germans

There may be one reason why the Germans always get their towels down first and why their economy outshines the UK’s - their sleeping habits.

Scientists have found that not only do Germans sleep less and get up earlier than people in Britain, but they also spring out of bed some eight minutes earlier and start work half an hour earlier.

Professor Russell Foster, Neuroscientist at the University of Oxford opened the first day of the Cheltenham Science Festival with his findings on the sleep patterns of 75,000 Germans and Britons.

The professor said however, that British respondents were far more likely to be in tune with their bodies having less “social jetlag” - the difference between the time people get up with an alarm and without one than Germans, which he attributed to flexible work start times.
