Car thieves stab man, 57, in attack

A man has been "viciously attacked" after he confronted thieves trying to steal his neighbour's car.

The 57-year-old was stabbed by three men outside his home in Lefroy Street in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, on Monday.

Police are treating the attack as attempted murder.

The man is in a "serious but stable" condition in Monklands hospital in Airdrie following the attack.

Police said the victim and his wife heard noises outside their home and saw three men acting suspiciously at his neighbour's car.

The man went outside and confronted the group, who stabbed him before running away. Police were called to the scene at around 5.40am.

Detective Inspector Bob Frew, from Strathclyde Police, who is leading the investigation, said: "It really does beggar belief that he was attacked so viciously for just trying to defend property.

"We believe that the three men involved were opportunists looking to steal anything they could.

"It is possible that they had been in the area for a while as there were a number of break-ins or attempts to break in at other houses and cars. Someone must have seen or heard something, and we would urge them to come forward."

Police are checking CCTV and carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area to try to find out who the attackers were.
