'Chemical suicide pact' probed

Police are investigating the deaths of a 34-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man in an apparent chemical suicide pact.

The pair were found in a Vauxhall Astra parked near industrial units in Braintree, Essex, on Monday.

Notes had been placed on the windows of the vehicle warning of toxic chemicals inside and telling passers-by not to open the doors.

Police described the deaths as "highly unusual" and said "noxious" substances had been found inside the car.

A spokeswoman for Essex Police confirmed the ages of the man and woman but would not say where they were from.

She said the car had been taken to a secure compound.

The deaths are being treated as unexplained and investigations are continuing, she added.
