Dad stabbed to death at toddler's party
A "totally blameless" young father was fatally stabbed in the heart at a child's party, the Old Bailey heard today.
Kanthasamy Akilakumar, 28, was left bleeding on the floor of a community centre in Mitcham, Surrey during the celebration of a toddler's birthday, jurors were told.
Opening the prosecution case, Sarah Whitehouse said: "He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. He died within minutes on the floor of the hall amidst the party celebrations."
The court heard that a Sri Lankan couple had invited 50 to 60 friends and relatives to the New Horizon Centre on October 22 last year to celebrate their young daughter's birthday.
Ms Whitehouse told jurors: "Tragically there was a much darker side to this happy, innocent festival. The darker side involved robbery and drug dealing and violence, and finally death."
Dwayne Roberts, 18, from Mitcham, was living in a nearby hostel at the time and is accused of murdering Mr Akilakumar, which he denies.
