Footballers held over damaged cars
Two Premier League footballers have been arrested after cars were damaged in a city centre.
Lee Cattermole and Nicklas Bendtner, who play for Sunderland, were held by Northumbria Police on Thursday.
They were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and bailed following an incident in Stowell Street, Newcastle, at about 10pm on December 6.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police can confirm that on Thursday December 15 two men aged 23 were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.
"It follows an investigation into cars damaged on Stowell Street in Newcastle city centre which happened about 10pm on Tuesday December 6.
"The two men have been bailed."
Bendtner, a Danish international, is spending a year on Wearside on loan from Arsenal.
The alleged damage, believed to have involved at least three cars, was said to have taken place two days after struggling Sunderland lost 2-1 at Wolves. Officers will scour CCTV images of the area to establish who was responsible for the wrecking spree.
Neither player was on the pitch for disciplinarian manager Martin O'Neill's first game in charge at the Stadium of Light, a last-gap win over Blackburn.
Club captain Cattermole was suspended after picking up five yellow cards this season, while Bendtner had a groin injury.
