George Best's ex-wife Alex charged with drink-driving
George Best's former wife has been charged with drink-driving after crashing into a tree, it has been reported.
Alex Best (47) was treated for minor injuries after the collision on April 6 in Kingswood, Surrey.
She was breathalysed before being charged with driving while over the limit and taken into police custody.
Ms Best is due to appear at Guildford Magistrates' Court on May 3, a spokesman for Surrey Police said in a statement.
Sources said she had spent part of the day earlier in the company of Lembit Opik, the former Liberal Democrat MP, originally from Bangor, Co Down. The pair became friends after appearing on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here and other reality TV shows.
Mr Opik and his then partner, Bulgarian lawyer Sabina Vankova, split in 2017 after he accidentally sent her photos of himself nuzzling Ms Best's c hest.
At the time, Ms Vankova, with whom Mr Opik has a daughter, said "their friendship has crossed a line". But Ms Best denied there was any inappropriate relationship.
Born Alexandra Pursey, the former air stewardess was married to east Belfast footballing legend George for nine years before their 2004 divorce.
For a time, the pair lived in Portavogie, Co Down.
The Manchester United striker and Northern Ireland international died the following year, at the age of 59, after a long battle against alcoholism.
His first wife, and mother of his son Calum, was model Angela MacDonald James.
