Hostage assessed after knife ordeal

An elderly woman is being assessed by medical teams after being held captive for more than 24 hours by a knife-wielding man inside her own home.

The 79-year-old is not believed to be seriously injured after her ordeal and is being treated at the scene at Perry Hill Road in Oldbury, West Midlands.

A 40-year-old man came out of the property just after 11am, police said.

He has been arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment and has been taken to a police station in the West Midlands.

Officers were called to the property shortly after 7am on Sunday, after concerns for the pensioner's welfare were raised.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said the man was inside the property armed with a knife, adding that the incident was believed to be domestic-related.

Armed officers and specially trained negotiators were at the scene, and a number of roads surrounding the address were cordoned off.

Assistant Chief Constable Sharon Rowe said: "I would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding whilst we worked to bring this to a peaceful conclusion."
