Hunt for man with gun at hospital

A man was seen with a suspected firearm at Leicester General Hospital, a health trust spokeswoman has said.

Police are helping hospital staff conduct a search of the site after the man was spotted around 8.45am on Friday.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said armed officers had been called to the hospital.

She said: "We are currently working with hospital staff to try and locate the man. In the interests of public safety we would ask people to avoid the area where possible until the situation is resolved."

The movements of staff and patients are being restricted as the search takes place, but the hospital remains open.

A member of staff saw the man and alerted police, the health trust spokeswoman said, but she could not confirm where he was seen.
