In fourth place is the Audi A3, ahead of the Ford Focus.

CarGurus spokeswoman Sarah Welch said: “Political pollsters are always looking for ways to segment and target voters, and identifying voters by the cars they drive is one way of doing this.

“‘Mondeo Man’ was a popular saying back in the New Labour heyday, but now it is interesting to see that the car which could define swing voters in the UK’s marginal seats is the German-made BMW 3 Series.

“Our data shows that ‘Mondeo Man’ has certainly grown up, and he or she seems to have more luxurious aspirations now too.”

The most popular second-hand car varies between swing seats, with Ynys Mon residents favouring the Toyota Land Cruiser, while the most common search by Wirral West motorists is the Honda CR-V.
