Lucky couple celebrate after early wedding anniversary gift of £1m Lotto win
Martin and Debbie Brandist are planning on buying a holiday home in the Canaries.
A lucky couple have received the perfect first wedding anniversary gift after winning £1 million on the lottery.
Martin Brandist, 54, and 48-year-old wife Debbie, from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, are now planning on buying a holiday home in Lanzarote in the Canaries.
Their lucky dip Lotto win, matching five main numbers and the bonus ball in the September 18 draw, means the couple – who have three children between them – are also planning on spending new year at Disneyland Paris.
The couple announced their win this week just days after marking their first wedding anniversary on Sunday.
It will make such a difference to us and our families Martin Brandist
Keen angler Mr Brandist has now quit his job with the NHS, although his wife is planning on continuing with her role as a finance manager in the National Health Service.
Mr Brandist said he had been playing the National Lottery for 25 years with “the same numbers”, but it was a free lucky dip which bagged the couple their winnings.
He described how his wife danced around the bedroom “jigging about all over the place” after checking the winning numbers at 6.30am, the morning after the draw.
Mr Brandist said: “In a daze, I dashed into the bedroom to ask Debbie to scan the ticket on her phone and unbelievably it came up with the same message, congratulating us.
“At that point I was just standing there in shock, my face went white and my mouth was wide open.”
He added: “I’ve played the National Lottery since it started 25 years ago, with the same numbers made up of special birthdays and house numbers, but I never dreamt this would happen to us.
“It will make such a difference to us and our families.”
The couple, whose children are 23, 19, and 14, said they had dreamed of having their “own little place in Lanzarote”, with Mr Brandish planning a trip to the Canaries to start the property search.
He said: “We can live our dream and go out there several times a year, perhaps even spend winters out there – and our relatives can use it too.
“Debbie has been learning the language for a while and one day we’d love to move to Lanzarote full time.”
Mr Brandist explained that it was the couple’s usual lottery numbers which helped bag the money, after they won a free lucky dip chance when matching two numbers on a previous weekend.
He said: “The following day it was a lovely sunny morning and I’d gone to our local garage to get some barbecue coals, thinking we’d have our last barbecue of the year rather than a Sunday roast.
“That’s when I exchanged the free Lucky Dip for a go on the Wednesday draw – the night our lives were about to change forever.”
Mr Brandist, a former NHS materials management officer, is now taking a break from work and is planning on doing more volunteering before looking for a new role.
He is also planning on entering more angling competitions and, with that in mind, will have more space for his fishing tackle after treating himself to a Volkswagen T-Roc SUV, replacing his old Toyota Yaris.
Mrs Brandist has also been buying new clothes, while there are plans to clear the mortgage and buy treats for their children.
