Man arrested over shooting murder

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 22-year-old was killed in the early hours of New Year's Day.

The victim, who was named locally as Aaron and described as "a humble person who loved life", was found suffering from gunshot wounds in Clerkenwell, London, and pronounced dead just after 5am.

The suspect, who is in his 20s, is being held in custody at a north London police station, Scotland Yard said.

An inquiry was launched by Trident, which investigates gun-related murders within the black community, after officers and ambulance staff were called to reports of the shooting at about 4.10am in Portpool Lane.

The suspect is believed to have fled in the direction of Leather Lane, a police spokesman said.

Next of kin have been informed of the death and a post-mortem examination will be held at St Pancras mortuary.

Detectives asked witnesses to come forward and Detective Chief Inspector John Crossley said: "We are particularly appealing for those with businesses in the area to make contact so that we can access their premises and retrieve CCTV footage.

"It is essential that we view any CCTV as soon as possible to see if anything of use to the inquiry can be gleaned."

Floral tributes were laid at the end of Portpool Lane, which was cordoned off by police along with the entrances to the surrounding estate.

One card read: "Always in my heart. Never apart. Love you. Mum xxx". Another said: "Rest in perfect peace. Family will miss you. Happy birthday. See you on the other side."
