Man charged with boy's 1990 murder
Police have charged a man with the murder of a teenage boy whose body was found in a derelict property 22 years ago.
Steven Grieveson, 42, was charged with murdering Simon Martin, 14, whose body was discovered at Gilside House, Roker, in May 1990.
Kingsley Hyland, head of the complex casework unit at CPS North East, said: "I have authorised Northumbria Police to charge Steven John Grieveson (AKA Steven John Field), 42, with one count of murder, after careful consideration of new evidence in this case.
"The charge relates to the discovery of the body of 14-year old Simon Martin at a derelict property in Sunderland, on 26 May 1990.
"He will appear via video link at Sunderland Magistrates' Court on December 4."
Simon's semi-naked body was found in an alcove of the seafront house, which has now been demolished.
The child, from Amy Street, Southwick, had suffered head injuries.
In 2002 Northumbria Police paid out a five-figure sum to a man, aged 16 at the time, whom they arrested on suspicion of murdering Simon.
