Man charged with father's murder

Police have charged a man with the murder of his elderly father, even though they have not found a body.

Northumbria Police appealed on Wednesday night for information about the whereabouts of frail Francis Willis, 85, of Staindrop, Leam Lane Estate, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, who walked with a shuffle.

Police said they were concerned "because of his age and health", as he had not been seen since the week beginning August 15.

Detectives last night said they had charged Mr Willis's 62-year-old son, also Francis, of Carr Hill, Gateshead, with murder and he will appear before Gateshead Magistrates today.

The search for a body was continuing, police said.
