Man dies as car crashes on icy road

A man has died and a woman is fighting for her life in hospital after their car crashed in icy conditions.

The 48-year-old man and the 28-year-old woman were in a grey Volvo S60 when it hit a crash barrier and overturned on a bend in the road near Thorngumbald, East Yorkshire, at 5.20am today.

Two other men in the car are also being treated in hospital for injuries.

A Humberside Police spokesman said the Volvo was travelling westbound from Thorngumbald along the A1033 "when it failed to negotiate a sweeping right hand bend in very icy conditions.

"The off-side of the vehicle collided with a barrier and came to rest on its roof in a ditch.

"A 48-year-old local man was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary but was pronounced dead.

"A 28-year-old local woman is being treated in the high dependency unit at Hull Royal Infirmary with life-threatening injuries.

"Two other local men are being treated for serious, but non life-threatening, injuries."

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.
