Man held over girl's fall death

Police investigating the death of a two-year-old girl who was reported to have fallen down stairs have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

Roxie Jo-Anne Archer sustained a head injury at her home in Greater Manchester on Saturday and later died in hospital.

Detectives from Greater Manchester Police's major incident team are investigating the circumstances surrounding how the toddler, from Ashton-under-Lyne, came to suffer the injury.

The force said a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and has been taken into custody for questioning.

Roxie's mother, Sophie, had gone on a surprise trip to New York with her father to celebrate her 21st birthday and was informed of the tragedy as they arrived in the United States. They returned home two hours later, the family said.

In a statement issued by police on behalf of the family, they said: "Roxie was a beautiful and clever little girl who had a smile that warmed the hearts of everyone who knew her.

"She had huge endearing eyes and a smile that filled a room. She loved to sing and dance, a little princess with a mischievous streak. Roxie has been tragically taken from us and heaven gained the brightest of all the stars.

"Her family are devastated and would appreciate to be left to grieve privately at this harrowing time.

"This was the first time that Roxie's mum Sophie had been away from Roxie. She had gone on a surprise trip to New York with her father to celebrate her 21st birthday.

"Sophie was only in New York for two hours before returning home after receiving this dreadful news."
