Man in court over party 'murder'

A man will appear in court today charged with murder after another man was found dead at a New Year's Eve party.

John Keenan was found with a serious head injury in Sidney Street, Whitechapel, east London, shortly after 1.30am yesterday.

The 43-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination found Mr Keenan died from a brain injury following an assault.

Terry Hamer, 34, of Newbold Cottages, Sidney Street, will appear at Thames Magistrates' Court today charged with murder, Scotland Yard said.

A Met spokeswoman said: "At this early stage it is understood that an altercation has taken place during a private party at the address, and that the victim and those arrested are known to each other."

A 25-year-old woman who was also arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed to return to an east London police station in early February pending further inquiries.
