A man has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a small plane crashed in a field.

The aircraft came down near the village of Ashwell, in Hertfordshire, on Friday afternoon.

One man was critically injured and given emergency treatment at the scene, the East of England Ambulance Service said.

He was flown to a specialist trauma centre shortly after the crash at 6.23pm.

Trust spokesman Gary Sanderson said: "A man received life threatening injuries and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge for further care."

Crews from Letchworth and the East Anglian Air Ambulance were called to the scene.
