Man prayed for wife to get cancer

A couple broke up shortly after a man told his wife that he would pray for her to get cancer, a family court judge heard.

The woman told Judge Marcia Levy how her husband had said she was "always ill" and added: "I pray to Allah that you'll have cancer because you want people to feel sorry for you."

Judge Levy analysed evidence after the couple disagreed over where the couple's two daughters, aged nine and three, should live.

She was asked to make a series of findings of fact following a family court hearing in Barnet, north London.

The man said his estranged wife was a "pathological liar".

But Judge Levy concluded, in a written ruling, that the mother was telling the truth about the cancer prayer. She also concluded that the man had assaulted his wife a number of times.

Both were Muslims and had married under Islamic law, said the judge.

The woman said her husband had been "very strict" in his observance of Islam when they married. She said he wanted her to cover her clothes with a long coat and, on trains, would ask her why she was "gawping at people".

He denied that he asked her to dress more conservatively and said he was "pragmatic and tolerant".

The judge said the couple were both in their 40s but did not identify anyone involved.
