Man quizzed over drugs after death

A man is being questioned on suspicion of supplying drugs in connection with the death of a woman.

A 23-year-old woman was discovered shortly after midnight on Saturday at a property in Richardson Avenue, South Shields, South Tyneside.

She was taken to hospital but died a short time later, Northumbria Police said.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "At 12.35am, Saturday April 21, police received a report from the ambulance service that they had taken a woman from an address at Richardson Avenue in South Shields to South Tyneside Hospital.

"The 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Police are treating the incident as a sudden death and enquiries into the exact cause of death are being carried out.

"A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs and is currently in custody. The investigation is in the early stages and a report will be prepared for the coroner."
