A Royal Marine corporal will today be sentenced after pleading guilty to three charges of ill-treating new recruits - including hitting one in the groin with a stick.

Corporal Peter Clark will appear at Portsmouth Naval Base court martial centre after admitting the offences of ill-treating subordinates yesterday.

The 39-year-old admitted grabbing Marine Recruit (MR) Matthew Scott round the throat on May 19 last year, hitting MR Joshua Croxford in the testicle with a pace stick on June 30 last year, and hitting MR Adam Lushman in the face with a pair of combat boots on June 9 last year.

A pace stick is a long stick carried by a drill instructor as a symbol of authority and it is used to set a marching pace.

The corporal, based at the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, Devon, was due to stand trial for 14 charges, b ut after he entered the three guilty pleas, the prosecution offered no evidence on the other charges and Judge Advocate General Jeff Blackett formally found him not guilty of those counts.
