Mother gives birth to girl at garage

By Tom Pugh

Police officers found themselves being midwives when they helped deliver a baby at a petrol station.

Frantic Barry Marcantonio pulled into a Shell garage after spotting a police car there just as his wife Beith was due to give birth. Mr Marcantonio dialled 999 while shouting out for the exact location of the garage in Brighton Road, Shoreham, West Sussex.

Sussex Police PCs Roisin Vafaee and Jenny Pieterson rushed over to Beth's aid and helped deliver baby Thea.

Mrs Marcantonio said: "In a situation where I should have been absolutely terrified, I was bizarrely calm and totally reassured by Roisin's voice."

An ambulance took the family from the garage to hospital where Thea weighed in at 8lbs 10oz around 6pm on Wednesday.
