Murderer accused of prison escape

A murderer who absconded from prison has been charged with escaping from lawful custody.

Alan Giles, formerly from Quinton, near Birmingham, walked out of an open section of HMP Hewell in Worcestershire on October 28 while serving life for the 1995 murder of a 16-year-old student.

The 56-year-old was arrested in the Gunnings Road area of Alchester, Warwickshire, last night after police received a call from a member of the public just after 6pm.

West Mercia Police have now charged Giles with escaping from lawful custody.

He will appear at Worcester Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning to face the charge.

Following the court appearance, Giles will be returned to the custody of the Prison Service, the force said.
