Nine years for rogue builder

By Ben Mitchell

A rogue builder who escorted pensioners to their banks to ensure he was paid for his dodgy work has been jailed for nine years after conning customers out of more than £105,000.

Paul Gaffney (51), of Park Grove, Portsmouth, Hampshire, was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court for fraud involving 18 householders.

A Portsmouth City Council spokesman said that Gaffney would approach residents on their doorsteps and carry out substandard work.

The spokesman said: "Gaffney had no qualms about ripping off elderly residents for falsely or improperly-done home repairs. He even bullied some elderly customers, accompanying them to their banks to withdraw his payment."
