Paul Cutler’s hopes dashed
Hopes of the Irish collecting a medal in the European Amateur Individual Championship in Finland disappeared yesterday as Paul Cutler continued to play steadily, but not spectacularly, as he fell 14 strokes off the pace.
The Walker Cup hopeful from Portstewart returned a one-over-par 73 for a 54-hole aggregate of 217 and was upset at dropping strokes at each of the last two holes.
He posted halves of 37 and 36 and generally played with authority without ever threatening to challenge the leaders.
In contrast to Cutler the other Irish survivor, Rory Leonard, finished with a flourish, grabbing birdies at three of the last four holes having earlier carded six bogeys.
Leonard ended with a 74 for a 219 aggregate while Dara Lernihan, Cian Cutler and Alan Dunbar all failed to make the halfway cut.
