Philip to attend royal wedding

The Duke of Edinburgh had a hip replacement operation on April 4.

The Duke of Edinburgh will attend the royal wedding and join members of the monarchy for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

Philip had been in doubt for the royal nuptials after having a planned hip replacement operation at the beginning of April.

But royal fans got a boost when he made his first public appearance last week during the Royal Windsor Horse show.

He was spotted driving himself around in a Land Rover Freelander as he watched events and chatted to the Queen while sat at the wheel.

For about a month before the operation the duke had complained about trouble with the joint.

Philip was admitted to King Edward VII hospital in central London on April 3 and had the planned operation the following day.

At the time of the procedure Buckingham Palace said the surgery to replace the joint had been a success and Philip was “comfortable and in good spirits”.

The duke will have spent the past six weeks on a rehabilitation programme starting with moving with the aid of a stick or crutches and gradually progressing towards increased mobility.

The Queen Mother underwent two successful hip replacement operations in the 1990s, first a planned procedure when aged 95 then later an emergency operation when 97 following a fall.
