PM jets off for Portugal holiday

Prime Minister David Cameron is today jetting off to Portugal with his family for their summer holiday, Downing Street has confirmed.

But the PM will not have long to relax before he flies back to the UK on Sunday to attend the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

He will then travel to France and Belgium on Monday to take part in ceremonies to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War before rejoining wife Samantha and children Nancy, Elwen and Florence for the remainder of their sunshine break.

While in Belgium, Mr Cameron will also visit Nato's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, in preparation for hosting the alliance's summit in Wales in September.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who spent last week at the home of wife Miriam's parents in Spain, will be in London during the PM's absence, before returning to Spain later in August.

And Labour leader Ed Miliband revealed that he will be setting off for a holiday in the French countryside in 10 days' time.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister will travel to Portugal with his family today for their summer holiday. The Prime Minister will return to attend the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday and WW1 Centenary commemorations on Monday before re-joining his family."
