PM leads tributes after Harry and Meghan announce engagement

Theresa May offered her “very warmest congratulations”, wishing the couple “great happiness for the future”.

The world reacted with joy on Monday following the long-awaited news that Prince Harry is set to marry his American actress girlfriend Meghan Markle.

Prime Minister Theresa May offered her “very warmest congratulations”, wishing the couple “great happiness for the future”.

“I would like to offer my very warmest congratulations to HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle upon their engagement,” said Mrs May in a statement.

“This is a time of huge celebration and excitement for two people in love and, on behalf of myself, the Government and the country, I wish them great happiness for the future.”

Mrs May’s predecessor David Cameron called the announcement “wonderful news”, and wished the pair “a long and happy life together”.

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said he was “absolutely delighted to hear the news”, wishing them “many years of love, happiness and fulfilment”.

The Israeli President, Reuven Rivlin, was the first world leader to publicly send his congratulations – going as far as to invite the happy couple to honeymoon in Israel.

“Mazal Tov to HRH Prince Harry & fiancé @MeghanMarkle,” he wrote on Twitter, sending his “warmest regards” to the Royal Family and UK.

Defence Secretary Boris Johnson and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon both wished Prince Harry and Meghan Markle a long and happy life together, with Mr Johnson proclaiming the announcement “fantastic news”.

Piers Morgan, the TV presenter and former journalist who has previously called Ms Markle an “old friend”, said she would “make the perfect modern bride”, adding: “Do I get an invite?”

Paula Radcliffe, the world record holder and long-distance runner, and radio host Nigel Farage were also among the many celebrities to send their congratulations.

Tessy Ojo, chief executive of the Diana Award, said: “The Diana Award offers their warmest congratulations to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their engagement and we wish them every happiness for the future.

“Prince Harry has had a huge impact on the young people he’s met through our youth charity set up in memory of his mother Princess Diana. We know how delighted our young people will be to hear this news today.”

The Chancellor Philip Hammond and TV presenters Fearne Cotton and Holly Willoughby have all sent their congratulations to Prince Harry and Ms Markle on social media.

“I wish them a very happy future together,” added Mr Hammond.

Ronan Keating said he was “absolutely delighted” by the news, while David Walliams quipped: “And I thought Prince Harry was going to propose to me.”
