Prosthetic penis case: jury to begin deliberations

By Kim Pilling

A jury in the trial of a woman accused of impersonating a man for two years to dupe her friend into sex has started its deliberations.

Gayle Newland, 25, allegedly wore bandages across her chest and a swimsuit, disguised her voice and demanded the other woman put on a blindfold throughout when they met up.

The complainant says they had sex on a number of occasions before she ripped off her mask and in disbelief saw Newland wearing a prosthetic penis.

Newland said her accuser, also aged 25, always knew she was pretending to be man as they engaged in roleplay while struggling with their sexuality, Chester Crown Court heard.

She denies any blindfold was worn during sex or concealing her appearance.

The defendant admits creating a bogus Facebook profile in the name of Kye Fortune but said her friend played along with her online male persona in 2011.

They went on to spend "hundreds" of hours talking on the telephone and more than 100 hours in each other's company in hotels and the complainant's flat.

These encounters in 2013 included the complainant watching television and even sunbathing with Newland while remaining blindfolded, the trial heard.

A jury of eight women and four men deliberated for one hour and 35 minutes today before they were sent home for the night by Judge Roger Dutton.

Jurors will return tomorrow at 10am.

Newland, from Willaston, Cheshire, denies five counts of sexual assault between February and June 2013.
