‘Reckless’ driver jailed over teenager biker’s crash death

James Dye was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court after admitting causing the death of Ismael Martinan-Brittainby careless driving.

A “reckless” driver who fled after running over a 19-year-old motorcyclist, leaving him to die in the street, has been jailed for three years.

James Dye was handed the sentence at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday after admitting causing death by careless driving and driving without insurance, police said.

Spanish-born Ismael Martinan-Brittain was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Chatham, Kent, on January 2.

Dye, of Gillingham, had been driving erratically and swerving before the crash.

Afterwards, he got out of his Ford Focus and fled the scene, disposing of clothing and car keys in a field as he ran and making no attempt to help, a Kent Police spokesman said.

The 22-year-old previously faced the more serious charge of death by dangerous driving but prosecutors dropped this in light of his plea.

The victim’s mother, Maria Brittain, said he was a “wonderful son” who was dedicated to his family and loved motorbikes.

Investigating officer Pc Mick Sayer branded Dye “reckless” and said Mr Martinan-Brittain’s family would live with his “selfish” decision forever.
