Remains found in well in Crete may be UK tourist

By Harriet Line

Human remains have been discovered in a well in Crete where a British holidaymaker vanished over a decade ago.

Steven Cook, then 20, disappeared on a night out in Malia with friends in 2005 - the first holiday he had taken without his family.

Despite appeals on UK and Greek TV Steven - from Sandbach, Cheshire - has never been found.

In a post on the Find Steven Cook Facebook page his brother Chris said authorities are working on identifying the remains which were "found in a well near Malia".

Cheshire Police confirmed the discovery of "what appear to be human remains in Malia, Crete" and said officers were liaising with the Greek authorities.

Detective Inspector Gary McIntyre said: "Steven Cook's family is aware of the discovery and we will be keeping them updated. They have been provided with support since Steven went missing and this will continue.

"We will continue to liaise with both the Greek authorities and Steven's family moving forward."
