Revellers celebrate Pride event

Thousands of people have been enjoying the carnival atmosphere of a major gay pride event.

More than 60 community groups were represented in the floats taking part in the parade at the Brighton and Hove Pride event.

Among the figures created for the floats at the 40th anniversary event were David Beckham, Lady Gaga and Freddie Mercury. Participants dressed up in colourful costumes and danced along to the music playing on the floats.

The event finished at Preston Park, where about 20,000 people gathered for live music and other entertainment. The line-up was topped by Alison Moyet, the original line-up of the Sugababes and Paloma Faith.

A Sussex Police spokesman said that the event had passed off peacefully, with only 20 arrests for suspected offences related to possession of drugs, theft, ABH and public disorder.

Chief Superintendent Paul Morrison said: "This is one of the biggest policing operations we manage and it could not happen without the support and hard work from all those involved, and the thousands of people who travel from far and wide to attend it and help make it an amazing and fun event.

"Officers have made a number of arrests, which is expected at such a large event."

Paula Murray, assistant chief executive at Brighton and Hove City Council, said: "The parade was welcomed by crowds of thousands as it went through the city with waves and cheers, and the atmosphere up at Preston Park was great, people enjoying themselves with friends and family.

"Once again our joint working with the police and other agencies has been very successful throughout the day and will continue through the rest of the weekend."
