The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrive in the Royal Box on Centre Court

Andy Murray has smashed his way into the Wimbledon quarter-finals in front of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - then apologised to them for being sweaty.

William and Kate cheered the Scot through his last-16 game with Frenchman Richard Gasquet as SW19 baked in sweltering sunshine.

Murray said he had no idea the newlyweds were coming, but met them minutes after leaving Centre Court.

He said: "If I'd known they were coming I would have shaved.

"I was thinking to myself as I came off I was sweaty and very hairy.

"I said to them, 'I'm sorry, I'm a bit sweaty'.

"But yeah, it was really nice.

"For me those things are always quite difficult because there's lots of people around, so it's not the most natural way to be introduced to people.

"But it was very nice to get to meet them."

After breezing past Gasquet in straight sets, fourth seed Murray turned on his heels and bowed extravagantly to the Royal Box as William and Kate were already on their feet applauding him.
