Royal wedding crowds give thumbs up to Kate Middleton's dress

The Duchess of Cambridge's dress received a resounding thumbs-up from the thousands who gathered outside Westminster Abbey to watch the royal wedding.

There was a loud cheer from flag-waving well-wishers who had waited for days to be the first to see the Sarah Burton dress, made from white and ivory satin.

Kate turned twice to acknowledge the crowd before she was escorted by her father Michael Middleton into the abbey.

Marybeth Anderson, 39, flew in from Washington DC with her husband Scott who had given her the trip as a present.

She said: "It's a beautiful dress. The V-neck is pretty and also the long sleeves but she was always going to look beautiful.

"It's very classical, very traditional with her veil and hair down."

Edith Wuddah, 67, from Ghana, added: "I can't even stand, it's such a beautiful dress. It's nice and simple, there's not too much on her."

The dress by Burton, seen in the fashion world as Alexander McQueen's successor, was a closely guarded secret and was only announced as Kate stepped from her Rolls-Royce Phantom outside the abbey.

Thousands had camped for two nights for the prime spot. Many wanted to be the first to see the dress.

Sue Clavans, 49, from Leeds, added: "It's a gorgeous dress, stunning and so elegant.

"She looks like a proper princess."

Frankie Carroll, 17, from Eastbourne, said: "I was expecting the train to be a bit longer but I like the look."

Susan Kay-Williams, chief executive of the Royal School of Needlework, said the organisation was "absolutely thrilled to be called in to work on this unique commission".

"Our involvement with this special event continues our long tradition of work for royal occasions."
