Rubber bullet fired to end siege

Police fired a rubber bullet to end an hour-long siege, officials have confirmed.

Officers were called to a house in Durnford Road, Middlesbrough, shortly before 10.30pm last night, where a man reportedly claimed to have a gun.

Cleveland Police said that officers - including some who were armed - sealed off the area.

A spokeswoman said: " In response to the man's actions, a baton round was discharged by police shortly after 11.30pm.

"The man, who was inside the address, was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this stage.

"No-one else was in the address at the time of the incident and no-one else was injured."

A 46-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and will be questioned.

In line with national procedures, the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Anyone with information and who may have seen the incident was asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.
