Stab death solicitor inquest opens

An inquest will be held today into the mysterious death of a solicitor who died from stab wounds while he was jogging.

Peter Maine, 56, was found on the bank of the Wear close to Durham city centre on a Sunday morning in September 2013.

Police launched a murder-style investigation after he was found with three wounds to the heart, but they have since said he may have stabbed himself, although no weapon was found.

The married father-of-two, who lived on a wealthy estate at Wynyard near Billingham, Teesside, had been investigated as part of a wide-ranging inquiry into alleged mortgage fraud offences.

County Durham Coroner Andrew Tweddle will conclude the inquest at the Civic Centre, Crook from 10am.
