Staffordshire: Two killed in fireworks factory inferno

By Richard Vernalls

The bodies of two men have been discovered in the wreckage of a blaze-damaged fireworks warehouse following a detailed police search.

Staffordshire Police said the remains were discovered almost 24 hours after an explosion rocked the Baswich Industrial Estate in Stafford, sparking a huge fire which ripped through an industrial unit at 5.15pm yesterday.

A 53-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released and is now being treated as a witness.

Police said the dead men's families had been informed and were being supported by specially trained officers.

The grim news came after emergency services earlier began carrying out a methodical search of the gutted SP Plastics industrial unit and surrounding area.

Meanwhile, two men - one whose condition is described as "poorly" after suffering serious burns - remain in hospital after the blaze.

Searches of the scene involving specialist police teams and fire crew have been suspended but will continue today, police said.
