The Twitter account of a Tory councillor in the UK is no longer accessible after a racist tweet prompted massive backlash.

The offensive tweet came from Warwick councillor Nick Harrington's account at around midnight on Saturday night after Ireland awarded the UK zero points during the Eurovision final.

The tweet read, "#Eurovision2017 thanks Ireland.  You can keep your f'king gypsies! Hard border coming folks!"

It is not clear whether or not Mr Harrington posted the tweet himself but it generated backlash and his account appears to be suspended or deleted. However, a screenshot of the tweet has gone viral.

Some are now calling for his resignation while others have demanded an apology and one Twitter user claimed they had reported him to Surrey Police for hate speech.

However, on Sunday morning Surrey Police confirmed they had not received any complaints in relation to the tweet.
