TV presenter Chris Packham launches ‘wildlife-friendly’ clothing range

The campaigner and conservationist said he wants the outfits to inspire people to reconnect with nature.

TV presenter and naturalist Chris Packham has launched a new clothing range which he hopes will inspire people to explore the natural world.

Clothing in the range comes with a series of features including jackets lined with a footprints guide to help identify fox, badger and dog paw marks, and wildlife-themed camouflage patterned materials.

Outfits come with a pocket which can be removed and washed, for storing finds collected on rambles, hand-warming pouches and phone-friendly pockets, and do not have noisy fastenings which could scare off wildlife.

Children’s jackets also come with a set of fold-out field guides to help identify birds, mammals, butterflies and bugs, and a magnifying glass.

Packham, whose sister Jenny Packham is a fashion designer, said he came up with the designs in an effort to encourage people to get involved with nature again.

The campaigner and conservationist said of people’s relationship with the natural world: “They don’t get to feel it and therefore they never have the chance to fall in love with it.

“People have become disconnected from the outside world, principally because they don’t get to meet it first hand, see, hear or smell it.”

He said he had designed the clothes for the “budding biologist”.

“If one child puts on a coat from the range and goes out and falls in love with nature, I’ll be happy,” he said.

Packham’s memoir Fingers In The Sparkle Jar, which describes growing up with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism, and his obsession with nature, was recently voted the UK’s favourite nature book in an online poll organised by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

His wildlife-friendly clothing is available exclusively at Cotswold Outdoor.
