A man and a woman have been detained by police after a three-hour armed stand off at a city centre pharmacy.

Staff and members of the public who were held hostage during the ordeal in Edinburgh's Royal Mile have been released safely, police said.

Trained firearms officers deployed Taser to detain the man during the incident at the Royal Mile Pharmacy, Police Scotland confirmed.

The woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh after she fell ill.

Ragbir Singh's brother Mahindar Singh, 48, was one of several people trapped inside the pharmacy, who are now being looked after by the police and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Mr Singh, 60, was able to speak to his brother briefly before police escorted him away.

He said: "He said he was terrified, this was an ordeal.

"He was going into the chemists and the two people came in behind him. He said they had two Stanley knives and a syringe.

"He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We're very relieved that he is not hurt, we have been absolutely terrified.

"The most important thing is that everyone is safe."
