Ukip candidate held over 'assault'
A Ukip candidate has been arrested over an allegation of sexual assault, it has emerged.
Peter Lello, who is standing for mayor in Lewisham, London, was held after being accused of assaulting a homeless Bulgarian man, the Daily Mirror reported.
Scotland Yard said the attack is alleged to have taken place earlier this month.
Mr Lello is Ukip's campaign manager in Lewisham and is a council candidate in today's election for the borough's Grove Park ward.
He has been released on bail until June.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: " Detectives from Lewisham borough are investigating an allegation of sexual assault. The allegation was made to police on Sunday, 11 May.
"The assault is alleged to have taken place either the evening of 2 May or the early hours of 3 May at an address in Lewisham. The victim is male.
"On the afternoon of 15 May, officers arrested a man aged in his 40s in connection with their investigation. He has since been bailed until a date in June."
Government officials refused to confirm reports that Mr Lello had been suspended from his job in the Export Credits Guarantee Department.
A Department for Business, Innovation and Skills spokesman said: "It's now a police matter. We are not commenting any further."
