Ukip leader hits out at billboard campaign
Settled ethnic minorities will take "Big Brother" Government billboards that tell illegal immigrants to "go home or face arrest" as a sign of open warfare, Ukip leader Nigel Farage said yesterday.
Mr Farage accused the Government of trying to steal Ukip votes with the "diversionary tactic" to make it look like it was doing something about immigration and said the one-week London pilot scheme was like something the Stasi would do in communist East Germany.
Mr Farage told LBC 97.3 radio: "The danger is that the kind of message that is being sent from these billboards will be taken not just by illegal immigrants, but also by many people of settled ethnic minorities as being some sort of sign of open warfare."
Immigration Minister Mark Harper said: "This pilot is about targeting those individuals who have no right to be in the country... who are here illegally and we are giving them the opportunity and assistance to leave the country voluntarily."
