Ukip's Nigel Farage defends race slur
Nigel Farage has defended a former Ukip parliamentary candidate who quit after he was taped calling gay people "poofters" and a Chinese woman a "Ch****".
The Ukip leader described Kerry Smith as a "rough diamond", said his comments had not been made with malice, and asked: "If you or your mates are going for a Chinese, what do you call it?"
As well as criticising what he said was metropolitan snobbery towards "colloquial language", Mr Farage appeared to cast doubt on Mr Smith's explanation that he had been on strong painkillers.
Mr Farage said: "I haven't found sedatives that have that effect. I might have said a few things after other medication that I shouldn't have, but then we all have."
