Woman's body found near observatory

The body of a young woman has been found in undergrowth near to an observatory.

Police made the discovery at Bidston Hill observatory near Birkenhead, Merseyside, at about 5.30pm on Saturday following a call from a concerned member of the public.

An 18-year-old man from Moreton, Wirral, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The victim, believed to be in her late teens, has yet to be formally identified, Merseyside Police said. A post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death is expected to take place.

Police are appealing for information about anyone seen acting suspiciously lately at Bidston Hill, Bidston, to come forward.

The observatory, a Grade II listed building, is not in use at present.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "Crime scene investigators are in attendance at the scene and officers are appealing to anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously on Bidston Hill over the last few days to come forward.

"The 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives."
