By Claire McNeilly

The funeral of the former soldier who was killed by a landmine in Iraq is due to take place today.

Ian Chalmers (26) from east Belfast was fatally wounded in a roadside explosion 10 days ago, on Sunday August 26.

He died hours later in hospital.

The incident happened at the port of Al Kut on the Tigris river in south east Iraq, where Mr Chalmers was working as a security guard for London-based firm Aegis.

The funeral is due to take place at Bloomfield Methodist Church at 11am, after which he will be buried at Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr Chalmers had been married to American wife Vicky (29) for just six months when he died.

The couple, who had not yet gone on honeymoon, were planning a trip to the Canary Islands.

He is also survived by his parents Sandra and Keith, brothers Keith and Stephen, and sister Ruth.
