We all know Northern Ireland has the edge over the rest of the UK for hospitality but one Ulster landlady has been rewarded for going that extra mile.
Bernie McClelland from Rayanne House in Holywood has scooped the “AA Friendliest Landlady of the Year Award 2010”, beating off over 3,000 other competitors from England, Scotland and Wales.
She was particularly congratulated for opening the doors of her plush property to local residents evacuated following the recent car bomb attack at Holywood’s Palace Barracks.
She even provided a bridesmaid’s outfit to a guest who’s wedding clothes had gone missing with her luggage.
Bernie, who learned her trade in New York, and chef husband Conor, have teamed up to make a memorable experience at their 19th Century property on the shores of Belfast Lough.
“It’s a matter of treating everyone as an individual and setting time aside to talk to every guest so we can help meet their needs,” she says.
“We always ask where people are from and why they are visiting so that we can help them plan their visit to the area.”
Simon Numphud of AA said that Bernie went “above and beyond” for her guests.
“As well as running a delightful guest house which she takes great pride in, it’s her personal touch that makes Bernie stand out.”
