US to deport IRA Maze escapee

After spending over 18 months fighting deportation from America while in the custody of US immigration officials, Maze IRA escapee Pól Brennan has been told that he will be sent back to Ireland at the end of next week.

While no Government statement has yet been issued, the scheduled deportation appears to signal a rejection of Brennan’s formal petition asking US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to overrule a November 2008 deportation order by a Texas immigration judge.

Brennan, who initially faced deportation on May 18, appealed directly to Napolitano after an April immigration appeals court ruling upheld last November’s ruling against him.

Beth Feinberg, an attorney with thefirm representing Brennan, told the Belfast Telegraph the deportation notice surprised her.

“He’s been living in this country for nearly 25 years. He’s been married to his American wife for 20 years,” she said.
