Visitors invited to Wake the Giant at Warrenpoint

A 36-foot sleeping giant called Finn Mac Cumhaill will be parading through Warrenpoint town centre in the hope that local residents and tourists can help wake him up.

The Wake the Giant event, first held in 2016, is a two-day festival of entertainment and performance for families including music, arts and crafts and speciality food stalls.

It will take place on Saturday, 18 and Sunday, 19 August.

Renowned actor and writer, Dan Gordon, is the man charged with designing the narrative for this year’s show, adding his humorous signature and quirky style that will enthuse children and parents alike.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chair, Councillor Mark Murnin, said: “I am really looking forward to seeing our locals Wake the Giant this year and having the creative genius of Dan Gordon involved means that families are in for a real treat.”

The noisy parade will take place at 4pm, when Finn's family will ask the public to help wake him.

Wake the Giant is one of five events in the Giant Adventures summer programme, a series of family festivals run by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to showcase the region’s breath-taking mountains, coastline and mythical stories.

The stories of Finn Mac Cumhaill are woven deep into the history of this region – from his travails on Slieve Gullion, to his battles with rival giants.
