Warm wind blocked from UK

The big freeze has clung to the UK and Ireland due to a back-to-front weather system, according to weather experts.

Cold snaps are not unheard of but the distinctive aspect of this one is its sheer persistence — due to a highly unusual “blocking high” over Greenland, according to forecaster Robin Steel from Meteogroup.

“The main reason is that we have a large blocking high over Greenland and Iceland which means it keeps the winds across Northern Ireland and the UK in the north and north-easterly direction,” he says.

“The weather system has been stuck that way for a number of weeks now, it’s very unusual. If the wind would come in from the west, it would warm things up but it can’t get in.”
